The Masters: Bach
1 Chronicles 25, 2 Chronicles 5:13, Matthew 14:22-33, John 3:16, John 3:36, Romans 5:6, 1 Timothy 1:15
Johann Sebastian Bach, born in 1685 in Eisenach, Germany, was profoundly influenced by his faith and the teachings of Martin Luther that permeated his environment. He viewed music as a means to glorify God and communicate the truths of the gospel, often beginning his compositions with “JJ” (Jesu Juva, meaning “Jesus, help me”) and ending them with “SDG” (Soli Deo Gloria, meaning “To God alone be glory”). Bach believed music was a powerful tool for the proclamation of the gospel, and his works—such as his cantatas, passions, and organ chorales—reflect this conviction. His deep reliance on Scripture and his plea for divine assistance were integral to his musical genius, illustrating that his faith was inseparable from his art.
