This message tells the story of two kinds of need — a heart searching for satisfaction and a soul helpless to save itself. Jesus met a woman at a well whose life was full yet empty. Later, we read that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Both moments reveal the same truth: Christ meets us where we are. He satisfies the thirsty soul and saves the helpless sinner.
Message One — The Saviour of the World
Dissatisfaction and the Search for Meaning
The woman of Samaria came to the well in the heat of the day — alone, ashamed, and unsatisfied. She had sought fulfillment in relationships, yet nothing could fill the emptiness inside. Jesus met her there, not by accident, but because “He needed to go through Samaria.” The Lord was on a divine appointment to meet one soul who needed hope.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
When Jesus asked for water, she was confused that a Jewish man would even speak to her. But He quickly revealed a deeper truth: “If you knew the gift of God… you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
That living water is eternal life — the new satisfaction found in Christ alone.
As He spoke, He gently exposed the truth about her life. He knew her story, her sin, and her shame. Yet instead of condemning her, He offered forgiveness and fulfillment. She came to the well with an empty jar, but she left with a full heart.
Transformation and Testimony
The woman left her water pot and ran back to town, saying, “Come, see a man who told me all things that I ever did.” Her shame no longer defined her — she had met the Saviour of the world. Many in the city believed because of her testimony, but when they met Jesus themselves, they declared, “Now we believe… this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.”
He still satisfies hearts today.
Message Two — While We Were Still Sinners
The Helpless and the Holy
Romans 5 describes our true condition before God: “When we were without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” We are powerless to earn salvation. Like the helpless man on the road in Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, we cannot rescue ourselves — but Christ came to meet us where we are.
The gospel is not a list of things to do for God; it’s the announcement of what God has done for us through His Son.
Love Beyond Reason
God’s love doesn’t wait for us to improve. Scripture says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” It wasn’t our goodness that moved Him to act — it was His goodness alone. Jesus came for the ungodly, the undeserving, and the broken.
At the cross, He took our place — the pure for the impure, the strong for the weak, the righteous for the sinner. His death satisfied God’s justice so that we could be reconciled and restored.
The Right Time for Salvation
Paul writes that Christ died “at just the right time.” God’s timing is always perfect — not too late, not too early. That time is still now. The same Saviour who met the woman at the well and gave her living water offers eternal life today to all who believe.
