How Can I Be Saved? Salvation Explained
Eight questions that explain what the Bible teaches about salvation — why we need to be saved, what Jesus Christ has done, and how God’s gift of salvation is received.
In the Bible, salvation means being rescued from the guilt and penalty of sin and brought into a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It includes forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and deliverance from the judgment our sins deserve.
Question 1
Why Did God Create Us?
We aren’t here by chance. We are all created in the image of God, and he holds our breath in his hands. Every person has been created by God and for God. He loves us and wants us to enjoy life with Him eternally.
It’s important to know how valuable we are to Him. The Bible says “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins?[fn] And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
Luke 12:6–7

Why Do We Need Salvation?
We are very different from God. He is perfect, but we are not. We have wrong thoughts, actions, words, and motives. Whether it is lying, desiring something that isn’t ours, being proud and boastful, or saying hurtful words, these are just a few examples of sins that we all commit.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Sin is part of our human nature, and it separates us from God. God is holy and heaven is a holy place — we cannot go to heaven with our sins. God is also just, so He must judge sin.

Question 3
Why Can’t Good Works Save Us?
We may try many ways to reach God — being good, following a religion, joining a church, or trying to be a model citizen. But we can’t earn favour with God. He doesn’t ask us to work for salvation.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works…”
Ephesians 2:8–9
Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Romans 3:20
Nothing we do can satisfy the judgement that our sins require. Our best efforts do nothing to bring us into a relationship with God or release us from the penalty of our sins.

How Did God Provide a Saviour?
God didn’t leave us alone with this problem. Before we ever tried to reach God, He came to us. God sent His only Son, Jesus, into the world. His birth fulfilled a prophecy recorded in the Bible:
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14
Jesus Christ was a real man and truly God at the same time. He had no sins of His own, but experienced the pain and suffering caused by sin — so He could fully represent us before God.

Why Did Jesus Die on the Cross?
Jesus willingly died on a cross. He had the power to stop what was happening, but He gave Himself for us because He loves us. Just like a drowning swimmer needs a lifeguard to come to them, we needed a Saviour to come to our rescue.
Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
1 Peter 2:24
At the cross, He became accountable for our sins. He took the judgement that we deserve, so that we might go free.
Question 6
What Does the Resurrection Mean for Us Today?
On the third day after the crucifixion, Jesus rose again triumphant over death. He paid the price of sins once for all. If He had remained in the tomb, we would have no proof that God had accepted His sacrifice.
Knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
Romans 6:9
Because He rose, we know with confidence that forgiveness is real, death is not the end, and eternal life is secure for all who trust in Him.
Question 7
How Can I Be Saved?
The Bible’s answer is to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance means recognizing the truth about our sin and our need before God. Faith means placing our trust in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished through His death and resurrection, rather than relying on our own goodness or religious effort.
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.”
Acts 16:31
When God forgives your sins, He removes the barrier that previously kept you from a relationship with Him.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16
Question 8
Will You Receive God’s Gift of Salvation?
There is nothing you can do to earn salvation — Christ has done everything necessary for God to forgive your sins. Receiving this gift means acknowledging your sins and trusting in the Saviour God has provided.
Rejecting His gift of forgiveness leaves your sins and the judgement for them with you. But His invitation remains open.
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
John 3:36
“Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

A Life for Christ
When you trust in Jesus Christ, you become a child of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you. This doesn’t mean life here on earth will be perfect. But you can now experience a richness to life and a place in heaven, built on the love of a Saviour who has already promised you a grace from which nothing can separate you.
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.”
John 15:9
Jesus said “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). He wants you to live in that abundance — not as a performance, but as a relationship. God welcomes you into His family.
