Faith & History
The Impact of the Bible & Christianity on World History
Explore the lives of people whose Christian faith shaped what they did, what they sacrificed, and the influence they left behind. From martyrs and missionaries to musicians, scientists, reformers, and leaders, this series examines a part of history that is too often treated as incidental: the profound influence of the Bible and faith in Jesus Christ.
About the series
When faith becomes part of history.
History remembers remarkable people for what they accomplished. It does not always remember what compelled them to do it.
Across centuries, men and women have crossed oceans, challenged injustice, advanced scientific understanding, created enduring works of music and literature, served the suffering, confronted powerful institutions, and—in some cases—given their lives rather than deny what they believed.
For many of them, Christianity was not simply part of their cultural background. Their understanding of God, Scripture, Jesus Christ, human dignity, eternity, sacrifice, and service directly influenced the choices they made and the work for which history remembers them.
The Impact of the Bible and Christianity on World History explores those connections.
The series considers martyrs who died for their faith, missionaries who carried the gospel across cultures, messengers who proclaimed biblical truth, musicians whose faith shaped their work, and men and women who distinguished themselves in science, leadership, reform, literature, and other fields.
Their stories do not suggest that Christians have always acted consistently with the teaching of Christ, nor that Christianity alone explains every development in Western or world history. They do demonstrate something that is easily overlooked: Christian conviction has been a powerful force in the lives of individuals whose influence reached far beyond the walls of a church.
To understand their accomplishments fully, we also need to understand what they believed.
What happens when belief becomes conviction?
It is easy to admire the courage, discoveries, music, leadership, or sacrifice of a historical figure while separating those achievements from the beliefs that motivated them.
But what if the two cannot be separated?
As you explore these stories, look beyond simply what these people accomplished and consider a deeper question:
What did they believe strongly enough to shape the course of their lives?

More Than History
The faith that shaped their lives still asks something of ours.
The people in this series lived in different centuries, cultures, and circumstances. But the message at the centre of their Christian faith has not changed: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. Their stories may belong to history. The gospel they believed is a message for you today.
